Investing in Cognition

For over a decade, the tech industry has operated under the premise that software is consuming every facet of global business. This trend is evident in the market caps of the world’s largest companies, but until now, progress was limited by a fundamental bottleneck: the speed of human hands. Every line of code had to be manually typed by a tiny fraction of the global population. That constraint is evaporating with the arrival of cognition agents, specifically through tools like Devin, which are shifting the role of the software engineer from a digital bricklayer to a systemic architect.

The impact of this shift is already visible in massive industrial operations. At Mercedes Benz, a grueling COBOL migration that typically would have taken eight months was compressed into just eight days using these autonomous agents. Similarly, financial giants like Itau are seeing seventy percent of their security vulnerabilities remediated automatically. By handling ninety percent of production code, these agents allow engineers to multiply their output tenfold or even hundredfold, transforming them into managers of fleets of AI workers rather than individual contributors focused on artisanal coding.

Critics often argue that such leaps in automation signal the death of professions, yet history suggests the opposite occurs. Much like compilers and cloud computing did in previous eras, increasing leverage generally lowers costs and unlocks latent demand for new services. Because human needs are effectively infinite, making software cheaper and faster to build doesn’t eliminate jobs; instead, it creates an explosion of new possibilities and use cases that were previously too expensive to pursue.

This evolution is why venture capital firms like a16z are doubling down on leaders like Scott Wu and his team at Cognition. Wu, a former world champion programmer known for extreme speed and precision, represents a new breed of founder aiming for an infinite market. The goal is no longer just to optimize existing workflows but to reach a point where anyone with an idea can translate it directly into functional software without needing to master the manual labor of syntax and debugging.
