There May Not Be an iPhone 18 This Year

Apple fans are gearing up for the annual September reveal, but this year’s showcase might leave budget conscious shoppers waiting. While the upcoming Surprise and Shine event on September 9 is expected to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro, the Pro Max, and perhaps even a long awaited foldable device, industry insiders suggest the standard base model will be conspicuously absent. Leaks indicate that Apple is shifting its focus toward its most expensive hardware, potentially pushing the release of the entry level iPhone 18 back until the spring of 2027.

This pivot in strategy appears to be a response to global memory shortages and rising manufacturing costs. Former CEO Tim Cook previously hinted that price hikes were inevitable to keep pace with production expenses. According to Nabila Popal, a senior director at IDC, delaying the cheaper models allows Apple to balance its revenue streams by boosting sales during what is traditionally a slower spring quarter. By leaning into a trend called premiumization, Apple can generate maximum hype for its high end devices without having to aggressively hike prices on its cheapest phones, which could alienate casual buyers.

The shift comes as luxury tech becomes increasingly expensive across the board. With competitors like Samsung and Google raising prices on their latest foldables, Apple’s own rumored folding phone could command a staggering two thousand dollar price tag. To make these numbers more palatable, the company is pivoting toward financing and lease programs that allow users to rent devices through monthly fees rather than paying upfront. While this makes cutting edge tech more accessible, critics argue it pushes users away from actual ownership and deeper into a subscription based ecosystem.

Despite the immediate sticker shock, some economists remain hopeful that these trends are temporary. Shawn DuBravac of the Global Electronics Association suggests that while new technologies often debut at premium prices, market competition and manufacturing efficiency eventually drive costs down for everyone. For now, however, those hoping for an affordable upgrade this autumn may find themselves staring at empty shelves until next year.
