Singapore police flag comeback of ‘pump and dump’ stock scams, 21 cases reported since July

Singapore authorities are sounding the alarm over a sudden spike in pump and dump stock scams, reporting twenty one cases since July that primarily target investors interested in overseas markets. These fraudulent schemes often begin on social media or messaging apps like WhatsApp, where scammers masquerade as seasoned investment gurus or trading mentors. By building a rapport with unsuspecting victims, these predators recommend specific stocks listed in the United States or Hong Kong, claiming they possess immense growth potential.

The mechanics of the fraud involve coordinating artificial demand to inflate share prices before the scammers sell off their own holdings at peak value. This leaves retail investors holding worthless assets as the stock price inevitably crashes. In one particularly devastating instance, a group of five victims saw the value of their shares in a Hong Kong company plummet by nearly seventy five percent in just one week, resulting in collective losses exceeding four point six million Hong Kong dollars. Another local couple faced similar heartbreak after losing over five hundred thousand Singapore dollars in paper losses.

To make the deception feel authentic, criminals frequently set up chat groups using Singapore registered phone numbers. They employ accomplices who act as administrators to create a sense of urgency and peer pressure, demanding that members provide proof of their trades to ensure everyone is following the expert advice. Some scammers even go so far as to promise reimbursements once the bubble bursts, though these promises vanish along with the perpetrators once the money is gone.

Law enforcement officials noted that this particular brand of fraud was previously highlighted back in 2021 and cautioned the public against trusting unsolicited stock tips or succumbing to high pressure buy now tactics. Police specifically warned investors to stay away from overseas stocks with low liquidity and small market caps, as these are significantly easier for manipulators to control. Their final reminder remains simple yet crucial: no trading strategy can ever truly guarantee profits.
