$43 million expansion expected add 121 jobs along the gulf coast

The shores of Gulfport are set for a significant industrial boost as Gulf Ship announces a massive investment to expand and modernize its local operations. The company, part of the Edison Chouest Offshore family, is pouring more than 43.81 million dollars into its shipbuilding and steel fabrication facilities to keep up with a surging demand for American built commercial and government vessels. This initiative isn’t just about bigger buildings; it represents a high tech leap forward for the region, introducing robotic welding systems and automated assembly equipment designed to make production faster and safer for everyone on the floor.

Local officials are viewing the move as a win for both the economy and the community, noting that the expansion should bring 121 new jobs to the area by 2028. Governor Tate Reeves praised the announcement, stating that Mississippians are some of the finest shipbuilders in the country and possess the unique expertise needed to lead this sector of domestic manufacturing. To ensure the project stays on track, both Harrison County and the Mississippi Development Authority are stepping in with critical assistance for infrastructure and building upgrades.

Beyond the immediate job growth, executives say this project is part of a larger national push to revitalize America’s maritime industrial base. By integrating advanced panel production lines and enhanced material handling tools, Gulf Ship intends to tackle more complex vessel projects that were previously out of reach. According to CEO Gary Chouest, providing workers with world class technology is essential for staying competitive at the highest levels of global shipping.

Construction and modernization efforts are expected to wrap up by late 2027, marking another milestone in what has been a banner period for economic development in Mississippi. State leaders point toward this investment as evidence of a thriving business climate, mentioning that dozens of similar large scale projects currently remain in the pipeline. For those living along the Gulf Coast, these developments signal a renewed commitment to traditional industry powered by future facing technology.
